Transferring a Domain Name

The domain name transfer process is a reasonably simple procedure. Understanding it can help you manage it better, and not let it become a procedure too complex for you to handle.

Domain name transfer processes vary with (TLD’s) – .com/.net/.org/.us/.biz/.info, etc.

In general they involve the following steps:

* The domain lock which is in place for your domain is removed.
* You then contact your new registrar with the request to get the domain name transferred to their service.
* You provide the authentication code.
* Your new registrar gets in touch with the old registrar with this information.
* Your old registrar contacts you to corroborate the authenticity of the request. You might have already made a request to proceed with the transfer in your online account held with this registrar.
* Your old registrar now sanctions transfer of your domain to the new registrar.
* Transfer is achieved and you are informed of the same by the new registrar.
* All the information on the website is automatically copied over to the new registrar.
* The new registrar is now your designated registrar for the domain name.

Mostly, the transfer is accomplished within a period of about 5 days, although this could vary depending on the registrar you choose.

The domain name will not be transferable again for a period of 60 days, except back to the old registrar. Cost also varies depending on your registrar. Many registrars offer a package deal during transfer, such as free renewal for an additional year, and the like. Again, it depends on which registrar you get your domain name transferred to.
